Welcome to the first ever ‘thoughts from the bench’!
Back to Works in ProgressMy hope is that this becomes a space you can visit, knowing you will find little nuggets (and not too many puns) of useful information about jewellery, the design and make process, and a collection of stories that have manifested so beautifully in the studio, and become a big part of this crazy little journey of creation.
The first story takes us back in time a little…just a little…to my beginnings as a not yet flourishing, and very green goldsmith. Itis one of my favourites because it was so pivotal, and it always springs to mind when people ask, ‘why do you love this?’.
While studying in Auckland I would return home to Whangarei in the holidays, where I had an amazing job at a local café. It was fast paced with an intense buzz. Five years of making coffee, serving amazing regulars and learning everything I could from the best in the business. I adored it, but it couldn’t last forever.
To thank my incredible Mrs R, the special someone who took a chance and coached me through that era, I made her a gift. My very first bangle. I was nervous, she was gorgeous and gracious. We said our fond farewells and off into the trade I went.
A year went by, and it was time for a visit. It was this moment that cemented what jewellery would mean to me.
Mrs R was wearing her bangle as she said the most wonderous thing – this, I will never forget – “when I feel like the day will be hard and I am really going to need a friend, I put my bangle on. That is when I know everything will be ok”.
Those words mean the world to me and over fifteen years later they still inspire what I do every day. Every handmade piece is more than jewellery. It is a smile. It is confidence. It is your friend for life.
Thank you, for your interest so far! I hope as time progresses and these pages become fill up, this micro world of magic will reveal some of her secrets to you, and you fall even further in love, because it is a fiercelyfabulous thing!
